JP Heating and Air Conditioning Reviews

Keeping Your Dryer Ducts Clean is an Essential Part of Home Maintenance

At JP Heating & Air Conditioning, your safety is incredibly important to us. Many homeowners do not realize that dirty dryer ducts can be a very real fire hazard and are, in fact, a major cause of house fires. In this post, we will go through the steps you should take when cleaning your dryer ducts.

First, you should buy a vent cleaning kit. Many hardware / home improvement stores carry them. You can also buy online. Then, you need to locate your dryer’s ventilation system. Look behind your dryer and you should see an exhaust going into the wall that emerges outside your home into a vent. Once you have figured out where your exhaust system is, it’s time to disconnect your dryer. If you dryer is electric, you should unplug it from the wall and remove any components that are connecting the dryer’s vent pipe to its exhaust. You can then remove the vent pipe from the wall duct. If your dryer is powered by gas, you need to be mindful of the gas line and make sure not to pull or move it too much because of the potential of a gas leak. If you have any concerns about the gas line, you should call a professional.

Now that you’re ready to clean, you should remove the duct cover on the outside of your home. Using the brush from your kit, insert it into the vent outside of your home – being sure to follow any directions included with the kit. You can also start from the inside, but it may be easier to clean up the debris and dust inside rather than outside, and, if your dryer is in the basement it may work better because the outside vent is likely higher up. Next, you spin the rod that’s attached to your brush (usually counterclockwise as to not accidentally unscrew the brush or rod segments).

Once you have cleaned the length of the exhaust pipe with the brush, all that’s left is cleaning up, reattaching your duct cover, reconnecting your dryer, and giving it a test run. You may even be surprised at how much less time it takes for your laundry to dry!
