The Pros and Cons of Gas and Wood Burning Fireplaces
There is much debate about which option is better. However, the answer really depends on what you’re looking for, as there are pros and cons for both. In this post, we will take a closer look at the differences between gas and wood burning fireplaces to help you decide which option is right for you.
Ease of Use and Convenience
Gas Fireplaces
One of the great things about gas fireplaces is that they can be turned on and create warmth in an instant. By simply flipping a switch, you’re enjoying the heat and comfort that comes with the beautiful flames your gas fireplace produces.
There is some maintenance involved in having a gas fireplace, as well. Over time you may need to replace your ceramic logs or stones. You should also have your chimney and components inspected regularly by a licensed professional in order to avoid any serious issues.
Wood Fireplaces
It’s no surprise that wood fireplaces are not as convenient to operate. You have to gather wood, properly arrange it in the fireplace, light it, and stoke it until it’s ready to burn on its own. You will also need to add wood to the fire as needed to keep it going. While this may seem like a downside to some, there are others who truly enjoy building the fire and keeping it going.
With a wood fireplace, you are going to have to clean up ash. You will also have to manage the soot that escapes through your chimney. To avoid a chimney fire and other issues, we highly recommend hiring a licensed chimney sweep to come out to your home at least once a year (depending on frequency of use) to clean out your chimney.
Fuel Source
Gas Fireplaces
Gas fireplaces are a good option for those who already have gas heat or appliances in their home. If not, you will need to install a natural gas tank and lines into your home, as well as find a provider. Fortunately, natural gas is relatively inexpensive especially when using a high-efficiency gas fireplace.
Wood Fireplaces
Getting the fuel (wood) for wood fireplaces take a bit more effort, but also creates incomparable ambience in your home. Whether you have trees you can chop on your property or prefer to buy bundles that are precut, there is some labor involved.
