3 Residential Heating Tips from JP Heating & Air Conditioning

With the winter here in full swing, residents throughout Kalamazoo and beyond are beginning to face an age old struggle: keeping the cold outside their homes. But as the winter gets colder, that goal becomes increasingly easier said than done. Luckily, here at JP Heating & Air Conditioning, we know a wide range of ways to save money on residential heating in the winter—and today, we’re here to share them with you.
This month, we’ll be offering three tips to help you save money on your residential heating costs.
Tip #1: Open (Or Close) Curtains, Shades, and Drapes
During the winter, you’d be surprised just how much heat is generated by the sun. Despite the dreary cold that settles in every season, the sun still produces a surprising amount of heat during the daytime. So, in order to save money on heating costs, we recommend keeping your blinds open during the daytime. That way, your home’s interior can benefit from the heat generated by the sun.
During the nighttime, however, we recommend closing your curtains as the sun begins to set. Your curtains add a valuable layer of insulation to glass windows, which tend to be a huge area of heat loss in the home. As a result, you can keep residential heating costs much lower than usual.
Tip #2: Use Ceiling Fans
We can bet you didn’t expect this tip. When you think about it, though, it makes a lot of sense.
Usually, ceiling fans move in a counterclockwise motion as they spin. This is great during the summer, since it creates a localized breeze that pushes cold air down to residents and warm air up to the ceiling. But by setting your fan to run in reverse, the opposite happens: it pushes warm air down to you and pulls up cool air. This provides a more even temperature throughout the home, instead of allowing for cold spots that make you want to turn up the heat.
Tip #3: Get Furnace Repair Sooner Rather than Later
Often times, furnaces are still able to consistently produce heat despite being damaged or in a state of disrepair. As a result, homeowners can go months or years without knowing that they need furnace repair. All the while, that furnace will be working at a much lower efficiency, creating immense (but invisible) residential heating costs every winter. To prevent these costs or eventual furnace failure, it’s essential to get prompt furnace repair as soon as you notice unforeseen heating costs.
